“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace” (Colossians 3:15). This can be difficult when we are filled with worry and anxiety. This peace doesn’t focus on the absence of trouble. It is unrelated to our circumstances. This peace is a goodness of life that is not touched by what happens on the outside. You may be in the midst of great trials and still have biblical peace. Finding peace isn’t easy and neither is trying to not feel bothered about anything. When you are being bothered by everything. Instead be steadfast in your faith. With God nothing shall be impossible (Luke 1:37).
Some situations in our lives make us feel like we’re in a pressure cooker. And although we may be smiling on the outside, on the inside we are about to implode. Some of us even suffer from anxiety attacks. Which are an outward manifestation of these inward problems.
Anxiety attacks would come on me so horribly; it felt like I was being enveloped in a cloud of total darkness. But God graciously delivered me from them. I stopped feeding my face with two liter sodas twice a day and started feeding my faith instead of my fears with prayer and the Holy Scriptures—not prescription drugs. This is not condemnation on those who do use prescriptions drugs. Am just stating how God helped me overcome the anxiety attacks instead of allowing those anxiety attacks to overcome me.
Is it not written. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-8)
How do you find this peace? Isaiah 26:3 reads, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace; whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee.” The greatest temptation we fight during extreme trials is taking our eyes off God and having a pity party. So, when we keep our minds on the Word and trust Him—He will keep our minds in perfect peace. You have to maintain a focus on the Word of God and God’s promises in that Word.
This is no easy task. But, we can do all things through Christ who strenghthens us.(Philippians 4:13) You must have an immovable mind that rests in Jesus Christ. Simply said, one must train the mind to be stronger than one’s emotions. Or you will lose yourself in the battle every time.
When it seems like the waves of stress are overtaking you pray this prayer for strength:
Lord, thank you that you want us to cast our cares on you. Thank you that there is nowhere I can go that you are not there with me. Thank you for having a hold of my life, even as I feel like everything is crumbling around me.
Lord, I confess that I have let stress take a hold of my life, rather than You. I have let stress control my mood, my attitudes and my actions. Lord, I repent of this! Please Father, help me see what is stressful in my life and hand it over to You. Help me not let the stress win out. Help me actively think on Your goodness to me.
I am so hopeful for my eternity with you, Lord, where there will be NO more stress! Help me look back on all the ways You have rescued me from my stressful moments, and look in hope to the future where You will one day rid all stress, forever.
Help me live boldly in the truth of Your goodness and power today. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
