One thing I’ve learned about writing is, you have to take off the world’s cloak and find yourself. Or as some might say, find your writing voice. How did Lincoln put it? “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”

When you write from the strength of your soul with purpose, that purpose will reach out and touch who it is meant to touch. There will always be some critic somewhere who is not going to like your work for whatever reason. But that’s okay. Because at the end of the day if you have a passion for writing, you’ve given it you very best, and you are pleased with how it turned out. After the one hundredth edit. So long as you know you gave it your very best. That’s all anyone can expect.

Once you stop killing yourself with perfectionism and start a diet of vision and purpose; you will get there. Some of the best books I’ve ever read weren’t on the New York Times Bestsellers list. I had to learn early in the writing game that just because a book is not on the bestsellers list does not mean it is not a good book. I’ve read some books from the New York Times Bestseller’s list and found them unarguably good. But then some weren’t, It’s just like when you watch the Oscars and the movie you know should’ve won didn’t then you scratch your head in wonder. But if in your writing vision you have that list in your sights… Don’t listen to the naysayers follow your heart with purpose and go for it!

The writing world is limitless. It is people’s opinions that put the limits on us, if we allow them to. I like Oscar Wilde’s attitude. He writes, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” Don’t let opinions get inside of your head until all the good books you could write are on the outside floating in clouds of doubt and fear.

Just keep pecking those darn keys until you reach your view of success. Until next week… Blessings and Peace.

  1. Thanks for the permission and confirmation to be true to myself. Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes. “ don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive. Find that and do that, because that’s what the world needs”
