According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, muchness means “the quality or state of being in great quantity, extent, or degree.” In relation to the Alice/Mad Hatter interaction, the word muchness refers to something within Alice — her heart, her spirit.

Alice’s muchness came from her belief she should do six impossible things before breakfast. That was something she learned from her father. And to her credit, I believe it to be one of good practice. Because we too have learned from our Father: For nothing will be impossible with God. (Luke 1:37) Simply because your “it could never happen” could happen at any given moment in time. But, if you don’t try to do that which seems impossible then your ‘it could never happen’ will never come. If your choice is to let the parade of life pass you by; because you settled for commonality and comfortability. That too is alright. God will not love you any less. Through experience, I have learned to stay in my element and work to the glory of God. This is not a difficult thing to do when you come to the truth of who you are.

Is the impossible possible? Or is it simply an illusion? I submit to you the impossible is very possible and miracles happen every day. It is all in your belief system. Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23) The key here is “If you can believe.” Alice did.

This decision isolated her…

This mindset placed Alice in some very precarious situations. These all stemmed from a decision she made at a surprise engagement party, camouflaged as a garden party. Of which Alice wanted nothing to do. Marriage was not her cup of tea. At this garden party, she had already seen too many shenanigans that corroborated her resolve. This decision isolated her from the normal societal processes of what a young lady or woman was expected to do—marry well and raise a family. Being pinned down to a spoiled non-visionary boy for the rest of her life was not what Alice desired. As she told her mother in Alice through the Looking Glass. “I don’t want to end up like you!”

A young girl who had the vision…

I did not agree with the way she spoke to her mother. But, in hindsight, perhaps Alice was looking at how her mother, a woman with no skills, was left a widow always at the mercy of those more fortunate. Because she went along with society’s standards. A widow left to care for a daughter who had an imagination. A young girl who had the vision to see past the glum demands of society to something far better.

Have you ever found yourself in a precarious situation? Isolated and alone because you followed God’s instructions? When we obey God the outcome is not always rainbows, sprinkles, and confetti. When He places you in a certain position and your gyroscope of discernment is calibrated. You know deep in your spirit those instructions came from God. In this isolation did the thought ever occur to you the position in which God was placing you was to groom you for greater?

Because man cannot conceive the many facets in the realms of God’s impossibilities does not mean they do not exist.

My opinion—you never lose your muchness. It merely goes for a cruise on the wavy seas of time. While we deal with all the harsh realities holding us captive behind the brass bars of life’s many challenges.

… got lost in the pages of opinions…

When we are behind those bars we let our muchness stay adrift. Because our fight with the impossible is no longer one we think can be won, looking through our eyes of faith.  Even though we were taught God does the impossible each and every day. The weight of so many disappointing moments was much heavier than our muchness could bear. As the alternative of fighting to maintain our muchness, we got lost in the pages of opinions and standards forced upon us by the frivolities of men. Instead of following our moral compass to its true north into the realm of impossibilities regaining the right belief system for our muchness. (Philippians 2:5-11)

We got lost in an identity crisis.

We got lost in an identity crisis. Once off course, we did not remain true to that mindset of being steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding in the works of the Lord. (I Corinthians 15:58) We were tricked into believing our labor was in vain. Because the progress we set our success gage by kept us from gaining our footage. Causing us to slip into a pit where we cried and screamed but no one came to our rescue. Like Alice, we had to fight against the darkness and mind games that held us captive. (I Peter 2:12) We prayed, meditated, and fasted on our Father’s word. (Philippians 4:6) In so doing, regained the strength to emerge with a readiness to recapture a stronger muchness. And a renewed mindset, the impossible was once again a possibility; through the faith in our Father who created all things. (Colossians 1:16) A God who can even make time stand still, for us to gain victory over the enemy. (Joshua 10:12-14)

Likewise, Alice gained the victory over those fears that would have prevented her from walking into her true destiny; by slaying the Jabberwocky. Had Alice not defeated the enemy she would have ended up a shipping clerk instead of a sea captain. This newfound courage also enabled her to walk through the looking glass and gift the Mad Hatter with confirmation of his beliefs. Thereby strengthening his spirit with truth.

But we have a mediator in eternity…

For those of you who feel you’ve lost your muchness; time may well be a thief and a villain. But we have a Mediator in eternity that can set your future in your present at any given moment in time. (Isaiah 46:10) Thus allowing you access through Door Number One (Revelation 3:8) to regain your muchier muchness. No longer being deceived by the thoughts of the enemy, but led by the Word of God. (Colossians 2:8)

You see my friend, like Alice, I do believe in the impossible. I too am a living breathing impossibility. Living proof that all things are possible to him that believes. (Mark 9:23)

  1. A marvelous parallel and post, Claudia. And I must say that the tag at the end took me by surprise. I hadn’t realized you were a leukemia survival, much less one who’d survived against such slim odds. I’m so glad you’re still here to share you muchness with us!
