In talking with my mom, yesterday, I began reminiscing about the days of my youth. And in the conversation, there is a personal moment between us that I always reflect upon…On this particular morning, we had school and there was a lot of snow on the ground. My elementary school was on a hill and you had to climb that hill to get there. The snow was so deep–it was higher than my boots so momma put me on her back and carried me the rest of the way. I had some awesome childhood memories, but for some reason, that one always stands out the most.

What’s the point? The point is your mom might not have been able to give you the material things you really wanted and perhaps she wasn’t your idea of the greatest mom for whatever reason. But to me, the greatest gift any mother can give her child is love whether it’s in the form of a piggyback ride to school, a cupcake for your birthday, a phone call, or maybe just a hug or a kiss on the cheek. The scriptures tell us—“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3 NKJV) And that commandment is without conditions whether good or bad.

As a child, I had the first Chatty Cathy on our block, the first Schwinn bike, and the first Barbie dreamhouse. But the one thing that is resonant in my spirit is the time mom carried me to school that snowy day on her back. It’s the little things, those private moments—not the materialistic that are at the core of my being.

She has spidey senses too!

Mom turned 88 on March 26th of this year. And I am so blessed to still have her with me. She lives in Frankfort, Kentucky. And because of one incident or another, I have not seen her since her 80th birthday and I miss her so very much. I talk with her every week. She knows by the tone of my voice whether, I am happy, frustrated, or sad. She has spidey senses too! Better known as “Mother’s Instinct.” But our conversations usually end on a happy note and I wind up hanging up the phone either laughing or she’s in stitches.

If your mother is close by or even a phone call away please do your due diligence and make sure you let her know how much she is loved. Even if you couldn’t give her a gift or a card. Your voice is more precious than you will ever know. If there is a breach in your relationship try to mend it. Let her know how valuable she is. Because sometimes we mothers do have moments when we began questioning our parenting skills. Remind her how much you appreciate her and thank God for her because she is the only mother you will ever have.

And for those of you whose mother has gone on to be with the Lord; I pray that God in heaven will cover you with His wings of love and shower you with His unlimited mercy and grace.
