I take this verse literally, and choose not to drink alcohol.
Although it is not expressly forbidden in the Bible, alcohol use clouds judgment, and these days we all need to be as vigilant as we can. 😊

Sally there is a scripture that does say”Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities” (1 Tim 5:23). But this is specifically for an illness. I do agree with you that the gross over use of alcohol is most detrimental to our better judgement. For it is also written, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”(Ephesians 5:18)
