But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:4 NKJV)

What do you live by?

Thought of the Week: When Jesus answered satan, he answered him with scripture from Deuteronomy 8:3. Matthew’s chapter begins by teaching us about the wilderness. When we feel as though we are in a wilderness experience we must try to see it as a time of the Lord God proving us “to know what is in our hearts whether we will keep his commandments or not. He humbles us and suffers us to hunger for Him and His word. Which is manna to us thereby making it known to us that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord does man live.” Christ’s test of sonship, which is an overshadowing of our test, is obedience and entire trust in God who alone is the giver of every good gift. While the enemy’s tests of our sonship are his supply of lustful desires, external prosperity, and such; that starve a man’s spirit but feeds his flesh.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Your sheep know Your voice. I am Your little lamb, and I will follow You wherever You go. Increase my trust in You and Your commands. Let my ears ever be listening for Your voice, so that I can come running to Your side. Help me to trust You as my only shepherd, confident that You will keep me from all harm and danger. In Your faithful name, I pray. Amen.
