For weeks now the theme song from Mad Max Beyond The Thunderdome has been playing over and over in my mind and I can’t seem to shake it. I know there is a message in there somewhere—perhaps the message is in the lyrics of the title song We Don’t Need Another Hero.

…” We don’t need another hero
We don’t need to know the way home
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome… Looking for something
We can rely on
There’s gotta be something better out there… Love and compassion
Their day is coming (coming)
All else are castles built in the air… And I wonder when we
Are ever gonna change, change
Living under the fear
‘Til nothing else remains… All the children say
We don’t need another hero
We don’t need to know the way home
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome…

Even before Covid entered our lives the world was in need of a Savior. Covid and its variants just sped the process along. With all the imaginary superheroes out there from Batman to Wonder Woman, none of them can truly save us from ourselves. We don’t need another hero. The one true Savior is Jesus Christ. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (Romans 5:19) We don’t need to know the way home. Christ tells us in the word  “And where I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:4-9)

Obviously, we cannot rely on man as he does not have all the answers.

All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome. In the movie, the Thunderdome was originally designed to preserve order in Bartertown by bringing feuds to a quick and decisive end. But it quickly evolved into a bloodsport. Is that what’s happening with our world? Man’s laws and natural laws have put calamities around the globe and now we are all looking for something we can rely on. And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:11) Obviously, we cannot rely on man as he does not have all the answers. The only “something” we can rely on is God’s word and His promises to us. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (Matthew 24:35) Simply said, heaven and the earth will be taken away, but what God has proclaimed will last eternally. There is no expiration date on what He promised us.

There’s got to be something better out there—not in the world, but in the Word. The Word became flesh and dwelt amongst men. (John 1:14) Now sits on the right hand of the Father and intercedes on our behalf with love and compassion. And their day is coming. “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. (Mark 13:32-36) All else are castles built in the air.“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)

When is humanity going to stop absconding to “no man’s land”…

And I wonder when we are ever gonna change. When is mankind ever going to figure out that no matter how much genius he thinks he possesses he cannot solve all of the world’s problems because of limited wisdom? (Isaiah 55:8-9) When is humanity going to stop absconding to “no man’s land” in search of cures for everything in a Petrie dish, prescription bottle, liquor bottle, tv-show, cellphone, video game, or social media platform which merely feeds our mislabeled spiritual hunger with shadows of solutions that only take us further from the Truth and never satisfy our deficiencies? instead of taking a good look at our own reflections and getting to the true source of the problem? (Proverbs 27:19) No matter the actions you take—you cannot run from yourself. Living under the fear‘ Til nothing else remains? Are we living under the fear of ourselves and all of the atrocities we have committed through the ages? The annihilation of all the precious life and wholesome beauty around us until there is nothing left? This world doesn’t need another hero. No—This world needs Jesus Christ!

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, In these days of pandemic and unrest, Of earthquakes and insurrections, Peace feels like a mirage, Something always above the horizon, In our helplessness Lord, please be with us. Remind us when we encounter the suffering of others, That there is nothing that affects one of us, that does not affect us all. Are we not sisters and brothers, all of us brought to life by Your creative Spirit. All of us sanctified by Your incarnation? Draw us, Lord, to bring all of our humble tools. And work with You and each other to build a better world. One where each of Your children is honored as sacred. One where peace is the language we speak, the air we breathe. In Your Son’s precious name, we pray. Amen.

May the Blessings of the LORD be with you today and always. Thank you for your continued readership and support.….Blessings and Peace!
