Emotional Stability In An Unstable World
by Dr. Larry Hutton

Are you a person who worries easily, has difficulty controlling your temper, and becomes stressed out too often? Are you constantly haunted by depression or discouragement, getting your feelings hurt frequently, or having continuous strife in your home? According to the author, all of the things listed above are part of the emotional realm. As a matter of fact, he says they are actually emotional disorders!
The author declares that inside this 150-page book if you read and apply what you’ve read you can, through applying God’s word daily to your life, live a life free from every negative emotion. Comprised of 11 Chapters. Everything from The Sin of Worry to God’s Way of Doing Things to Partaking of the Divine Nature.
I’ve always been sort of a skeptic when it comes to seeing things of this nature simply because I’ve always harbored the sentiment “If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.” However, I may lend an exception to this book…
He writes “Worry never deals with the known realm–it always deals with the unknown realm. People worry about things that they don’t know about. When we don’t know about something, you might say that we are in the dark. Worry never did produce anything in its darkroom but a bunch of negatives. Giving examples of how worry dwells on the negative—What has happened. What is going to happen—what did they think; etc. (pg 20)
Based on I Peter 5:6-7 he further contends that living carefree while walking with God is a true sign of humility. This means the opposite would be true—living your life in constant worry is a sign that you are operating in pride.
Dr. Hutton progresses to the fact that to turn our thoughts of something bad might happen to something good is going to happen. WE MUST CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK! Referencing Romans 8:5-6: For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (pg 73) And further declares, “Here is something that EVERY child of God must learn if they want to be spiritually minded: What people say or do does not determine whether I walk in peace and joy. I am the only one who can choose how I am going to feel.” (pg 77)
This was an easy read. Although scripturally based, the majority of the book was composed of breaking down the scriptures with Greek definition explanations and comparative analogies concerning worry based on scriptural characters. Which would be a good read, especially for newbies of the church. There are some nuggets that one could walk away with that if applied, as scriptures, daily may lend results to overcoming our negative emotions.
