Happy Birthday, America! As we start making all of our preparations today to celebrate the birth of our nation. What are we really celebrating? Independence Day, known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly, all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security...

How many of you have read this document? And I don’t mean since high school or pulling bits and pieces from it to justify your way of life. Although this document was originally written to absolve the colonies from the grips of the king of Britain—I suppose what George Santayana said does hold true. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Do you really know your country’s history or are you simply going on hearsay? Is what you know fact or fiction? Just asking. After all, the word of God does say Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. (Proverbs 4:5-7 NKJV)
…we’ll just be going through the motions following the herd into Wonderland…
So, as we celebrate today with fireworks, family reunions, concerts, barbecues, picnics, parades, and baseball games perhaps we should really give sober and sincere thought to what this document says and truly means. Or just like many of us have taken so many such freedoms for granted such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—we’ll just be going through the motions following the herd into Wonderland without a clue. Wonder what the forefathers would think today?
