“It’s not what happens to you—it’s what you do with it.”

A very good friend of mine told me about this movie she’d watched that was about this boy who played basketball and had some major setbacks but had the faith to come back against all odds—but she couldn’t remember the name of the movie. So I took to my trusty keyboard—scoured the internet and found this film Hoovey.
Imagine doing exactly what you love to do. In this case for Eric “Hoovey” Elliott (Cody Linley) it was basketball. Something he loved to play that he excelled at. He’d been having bouts with dizziness, blurred vision, and extreme headaches until one day he collapsed on the basketball court when pushed during practice. Instead of waiting for the ambulance, his father Jeff (Patrick Warburton) insists on taking him to the ER himself only to slide onto the side of the road —stuck in the snow. He telephones his wife Ruth (Lauren Holly) to come help get him out with the tractor, but the tractor won’t turn on. Out of nowhere, three men appear and they push the truck to safety back onto the road.
They make it to the hospital where the doctor tells the family they’ve found a life-threatening tumor in his brain. After an eight-hour high-risk surgery, Eric uses his tenacity and faith to relearn how to do everything all over again. He is told that if he takes one more tumble on the basketball court he could lose his life. As the unpaid medical bills mount, Jeff’s firefighting salary isn’t enough, the family is swimming in debt seemingly overnight, and everything he and Ruth have built in their life dream of two kids is at stake. Although Hoovey feels like the family hardships are because of his surgery they manage to still hold on to each other and their faith.
Will Eric ever play basketball again and be as good as he was before the surgery? Will the family lose everything? You will have to watch the movie to find out.
Hoovey was released in 2015 and is 91 min long and rated PG. Can be seen on Amazon Prime, The Roku Channel, Sling TV, YouTube, and YouTube TV.
