I’ve been rummaging around in my idea closet and came up with this title for this week. What do the top 5 living authors have to say about their writing styles?
Writing style refers to how the author writes, along with the purpose of the writing. There are four primary forms of writing: expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. These styles are used to distinguish the purpose of an author’s writing. Expository writing is subject-oriented.
- Stephen King – One of the top best-selling authors of all time. Not only has he written successful novels but also more than one hundred short stories. King favored an epistolary form to produce realism in the novel by using a combination of letters, news clippings, magazine articles, and passages from books. Stephen King also creates identifiable characters that elicit immediate sympathy from readers due to inherently flawed but human traits.
2. J.K. Rowlings – Someone who hasn’t heard about Harry Potter would not know who J.K. Rowling is. Simplicity and accessibility. Rowling’s language isn’t overly complicated, which makes her books accessible to younger readers without alienating adults. She employs a straightforward vocabulary and sentence structure that invites readers of all ages into her magical world.
3. John Green –The Fault in Our Stars which was published in the year 2012, was his most successful work. John’s style of writing is realistic fiction. Green is passionate about people and his stories show the feelings of real people in real situations. John’s writing began when he started to write what he felt and what he saw in people. He writes to inspire and influence.
4. Elif Shafak – Shafak admitted to her fondness for complexity and diversity in her characters. She mentioned that her inclination toward diversity and multiculturalism is deeply rooted in her experiences in Istanbul, a city shaped by cosmopolitan encounters. The essayist believes that literature should bring the forgotten and silenced stories of society to the forefront, reiterating the tension between memory and amnesia in societies.
5. Alice Walker – is a novelist, short-story writer, poet, essayist, and activist. Her most famous novel, The Color Purple, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1983. Referring to her poetry writing style is a construct of metaphors, imagery, and idioms. Also, she rarely uses rhyme in her poetry, but instead, she includes syntax, euphony, and repetition to make her poetry sound rhythmic
If you are not familiar with any of these authors, at a suggestion seek them out to further see if you can identify your writing with their styles. Not only that but what is the continuity of their styles that leads to such creative success.
Now get back to pecking those darn keys! Thank you for your continued readership and support. Until next week…Blessings and Peace!
