Last weekend, I had the chance to visit some close friends I hadn’t seen in ages. Anytime I call to say I’d like to visit, they always welcome me with open arms. Our friendship has stayed strong over the years because of the wonderful memories we created when Bobbie and I lived in Lake Park, GA. Back then, the Pettys were a source of comfort and guidance for us, both emotionally and spiritually. They led two churches, and we often worshiped together. We’d spend time at each other’s homes eating, praying, discussing scripture, and most Sundays, we’d share a meal at the Farmhouse Restaurant.
When I arrived, Apostle Petty was heading out to pick up a few last-minute items. I offered her a ride, and we went to the store together. At the checkout, the cashier asked if we were preparing for a big Thanksgiving celebration. Without hesitation, we replied, “We celebrate Thanksgiving every day because we’re just thankful to be here.”

The aftermath of hurricanes Helene and Milton was a constant reminder of how much worse things could’ve been. We felt blessed to be alive, with our homes intact and our loved ones safe. This brought to mind the scripture, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV). It’s a verse we should all apply to our daily lives, recognizing that life is a gift from God. Staying in His will brings peace and purpose.
As we sit down to our bountiful tables today, let’s keep those affected by the hurricanes in our prayers—those who lost homes, belongings, or even loved ones. Let’s also pray for anyone facing hardship or searching for hope in dark times. It is only by God’s grace that we are in neither position.
It’s important not to get so wrapped up in traditions that we forget the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Gratitude shouldn’t be reserved for one day—it’s something we should carry with us every day of our lives!
