“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)
PROVERBS 9 IN ITS ENTIRETY.
Thought For The Week: In a world saturated with information, we often confuse mere knowledge with true wisdom. Our devices can provide facts and figures in an instant, but they cannot provide the moral compass or discernment that wisdom offers.
Proverbs 9:10 presents a foundational truth: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
What does it mean to “fear” the Lord? It’s not the shaking-in-your-boots terror we feel when facing a danger. Instead, it is a profound reverence, awe, and respect for the Creator of the universe. It is acknowledging His supreme power, His perfect holiness, and our dependence upon Him. This healthy, humble respect is the very starting line of genuine wisdom.
When we begin with God, we acknowledge that He is the source of all truth. This perspective changes how we approach life, learning, and decision-making. We move from trying to be the captains of our own lives to seeking His guidance.
The verse continues, “and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” True understanding isn’t just about accumulating data; it’s about seeing the world from God’s perspective. As we grow in our relationship with Him—studying His word, praying, and seeking His presence—our ability to discern between right and wrong, between the temporary and the eternal, begins to sharpen.
Reflection:
- Do I approach God with a sense of awe and reverence?
- Am I relying on my own intellect or seeking the “fear of the Lord” as my foundation for making decisions?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are the source of all wisdom and understanding. Help me to live in a posture of reverence and awe for You. May the “fear of the Lord” be the true beginning of wisdom in my life, guiding my steps and illuminating my path. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
