Sunday’s Devotion

This is the third time in as many years that this scripture has come before me. While seeking a text for today’s devotion, Psalm 34:7 is sitting right here on one of my scribbles, followed by…”Let the blessings of the Lord fall down.” I pray this blesses you today.

The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. (Psalm 34:7 NKJV)

PSALM 34 IN ITS ENTIRETY.

Thought For The Week: This Psalm is a powerful promise of divine protection and deliverance for those who have a reverent fear of the Lord. This verse, likely came from David’s own experience of God’s rescue, serves as a comforting assurance that believers are not alone in their struggles.

The word encamps uses military imagery, evoking a protective, encompassing presence, like an army guarding its camp. It represents constant, vigilant care, not just a fleeting intervention. This reminds us that God’s protection is extensive, covering every aspect of our lives.

In many Old Testament instances, the “Angel of the LORD” is not merely a regular angelic messenger but is understood to be a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ. The verse can also be read as a promise that Christ Himself surrounds and protects those who honor Him.

In this context, “fear” does not mean being terrified of God. Instead, it refers to a deep respect, awe, and honor for His power and holiness. This reverence is not a burden but a prerequisite for experiencing God’s protection. It signifies a heart of obedience and trust that recognizes God’s supreme authority in all circumstances.

The verse promises that the Angel of the Lord “delivers” those who fear Him. This means actively rescuing them from danger, providing strength, and guiding them through difficult situations.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of Your constant, vigilant presence in my life. Help me to cultivate a heart of deep reverence and obedience toward You, recognizing Your supreme authority. Remind me that I am never alone and that Your protection surrounds me. Please deliver me from my troubles, strengthen me in my weakness, and guide me with Your hand. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
