How Easy Is It Really?

Some weeks ago, one of the ministers of our church was invited to add her perspective to a book. She said the confinement of the word count was somewhat challenging, but after she saw the process, it wasn’t hard to do, and she could do it. At that moment, she was so self-convinced that I didn’t want to rain on her parade. But after contemplating her statement, it begged the question, “How easy is writing a book, really?”

After writing several books and numerous blog posts on the subject, I must admit that it’s not as easy as it looks. In this context, I must agree with Bryan Hutchinson—“If writing is easy, you’re doing it wrong.”

Writing demands far more than simply putting words on a page. It requires wrestling with ideas until they reveal their clarity, revisiting sentences that sounded brilliant in the moment but fall apart under a second glance, and confronting the quiet voice that insists you have nothing new to say.

It calls for discipline on the days when inspiration refuses to show up, and humility on the days when it overflows too quickly to organize. And perhaps most importantly, it requires the courage to be vulnerable—to share a piece of yourself with readers who may not always understand or agree.

Yes, the mechanics can be taught. Outlines can be created, drafts can be revised, and deadlines can be met. But the craft of writing—shaping a message that resonates, challenges, encourages, or transforms—demands persistence and heart. That is the part no one sees when they witness a Christian author or blogger share a polished piece. The struggle behind the scenes is invisible, but it is precisely that struggle that gives writing its depth.

So when someone says writing a book is easy, I smile. Not because they’re wrong, but because they haven’t yet discovered the beautiful, difficult journey that writing invites us into. And maybe that’s okay. Every writer finds out in their own time. Some learn it halfway through their first manuscript; others discover it the moment they try to turn inspiration into structure. But we all eventually realize that writing isn’t easy—it’s worthwhile.

Since you’ve gotten more go-go juice, get back to those darn keys! Thank you so much for your continued readership and support. Until next week…Blessings and Peace!

  1. I often struggle to write the “proper” response to a “sticky” email or to portray my feelings about something I read in this blogiverse.

I have walked through the process of getting published with others, but I’m not ready to take on the challenge myself.

    1. Tell me about it! I have been self-publishing but I need to get my marketing strategy together. I’ve been with you for years and there’s nothing your mind can conceive that you can’t achieve—trust God. Have a blessed new week. Thanks for stopping by.

      1. Thanks for the encouragement my friend. I started the day with the doors to my truck frozen shut. Fortunately I have a remote start and just had to wait for the interior temperature to come up enough to release the frozen doors.
