“Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard
Rather than the shout of a ruler of fools..”
— Ecclesiastes 9:17 (NKJV)

Thought For The Week: In our world today, the loudest voice often wins. Social media, news cycles, and daily arguments are dominated by shouting, clamoring, and impulsive reactions. It is easy to feel that to be heard, you must yell louder. Yet, the Teacher in Ecclesiastes invites us to a different kind of influence: the power of quiet wisdom.

The “shout of a ruler of fools” represents noise, power, and often, foolish pride. It gets immediate attention, but it rarely produces lasting, good fruit. It is like a tempest—noisy but destructive.

However, wisdom is often whispered. It is deliberate, calm, and rooted in God’s truth. True wisdom doesn’t need to force itself upon others; it earns respect through thoughtful action and gentle speech.

Application:

  1. Tune Out the Noise: Purposefully step away from the shouting of the world to hear the “still, small voice” of God.
  2. Choose Calm Over Clamor: In a conflict, resist the urge to react loudly. Take time to speak with wisdom rather than out of frustration.
  3. Value Substance Over Volume: Trust that a quiet word, spoken with love and truth, is more effective than a shouting match.

Prayer: Lord, give me the wisdom to recognize that true power is not found in noise. Help me to cultivate a quiet, gentle spirit and to speak words that build up, rather than shout to destroy. Let me be a bearer of Your wisdom in a noisy world. Amen.
