“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”— Revelation 21:8 (ESV)
Thought For The Week: Revelation 21 opens with a breathtaking vision of a new heaven and a new earth—a place where God dwells with His people, wiping away every tear and ending all sorrow. It is the ultimate hope of the Christian faith. However, Revelation 21:8 serves as a sobering boundary marker, delineating who enters this city and who is left outside.
It is easy to focus on the dramatic list of vices—murderers, sorcerers, and the immoral—but the list begins with the “cowardly” and the “faithless.” In the context of early Christians facing persecution, the cowardly were those who compromised their faith to avoid suffering. It describes a life that shrinks back from confessing Christ, valuing temporary comfort over eternal truth.
This verse isn’t meant to cause panic, but to invite examination. It contrasts the overcomer (Rev 21:7) with those who choose the path of the world. The “second death” is the consequence of choosing to embrace a life defined by sin rather than being made new by God.
The good news is that we are called to be overcomers. We don’t achieve this through our own perfection, but by letting the death and resurrection of Jesus define us, turning from the old life to the new.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the hope of the New Jerusalem. Search my heart today. Root out any fear that causes me to shrink back from standing for Your truth. I do not want to be among the cowardly, but to be an overcomer by Your grace. Strengthen me to live faithfully, turning away from the ways of this world and trusting only in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
