Much Ado About July 14th

Here we are in the middle of July already. It is really hot in Florida this year. The other day, we had a heat index of 110. Global warming is a reality—not a fantasy. People are hanging out at the beaches when it’s not raining.

Known as the theme park capital of the world, guests are coming in droves to visit our permanent residents, Mickey, and Universal, where you can visit Harry Potter or your favorite Minions. And besides the theme parks, there are at least 29 other things to do—click here to find out what they are. So much to do and so little time. Come on down, there’s always room for one more!

Anywho, on this day, there are twelve celebrations: Bastille Day, Bastille day (Saint Martin), Fete de la Fédération, National Be Nice to Bugs Day, National Grand Marnier Day, National Mac and Cheese Day, National No Splinters Day, National Tape Measure Day, Pandemonium Day, and for those of us who like hanging out at beaches surfing and deep sea diving — Shark Awareness Day.

Today, we also celebrate Emmeline Pankhurst Day, commemorating the birthday of the pioneering British suffragette leader and her relentless fight for women’s right to vote. In 1903, she established the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), whose followers became famous as the “suffragettes”. While her birth certificate records her birth on July 15, 1858, Pankhurst celebrated it on July 14th to align with Bastille Day, reflecting her revolutionary spirit.

Speaking of a revolutionary spirit. Let us not forget National Break Free From the Big Three Day, which encourages people to let go of the things that no longer serve them. It began as a campaign around switching mobile phone providers, but it has grown into a broader prompt to identify the unhelpful habits, draining relationships, and stale routines holding you back, and to take one practical step towards change.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of this day. Help us to care for Your creation, show kindness to others, and have the courage to stand for what is right. Give us the strength to let go of anything that keeps us from drawing closer to You, and guide us to walk faithfully in the footsteps of Christ. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
