Since today is National Give Something Away Day, I know a lot of us who put off Spring Cleaning could really get serious about getting rid of some things that we really don’t need. Stop holding on and let go so you can make room for greater blessings! National Give Something Away Day takes place every year on July 15th. Founded by Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher in 2015, the grassroots observance encourages radical generosity, sharing with others, and decluttering your home by donating or gifting items you no longer need. I know my garage needs cleaning out, and today would be a good day to start.

Today there are eighteen celebrations. Here are just a few—Celebration of the Horse Day, H.M. The Sultan’s Birthday (in lieu), National Be A Dork Day, National Clean Beauty Day, National Gummi Worm Day, National I Love Horses Day, National Pet Fire Safety Day, National Respect Canada Day, Saint Swithin’s Day, The Democracy and National Unity Day of Turkey, Unimwane Day, and World Youth Skills Day.

Speaking of skills—As we drive to the office or man our desks at home. Let us not forget Developmental Disability Professionals Day, observed annually on July 15, which honors the caseworkers, therapists, and support staff who advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Established in 2020 by the National Association for Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Specialists (NAQ), the day celebrates professionals facilitating care, residential services, and employment.

Here in Florida, organizations like the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council actively champion these support systems through community initiatives and advocacy. Local clinics, agencies, and families often celebrate by writing thank-you notes, hosting appreciation events, or providing gift cards to these vital frontline workers.

For all you poets out there, today is your chance to really shine. We celebrate Take Your Poet to Work Day, an annual mid-week literary holiday celebrated on the third Wednesday in July. You participate by bringing a picture, cutout, or Take Your Poet to Work Coloring Book cutout of your favorite wordsmith to your office, job site, or home workspace. A good topic of conversation. For me, it will be T.S. Eliot.

And the pièce de résistance for our local food connoisseurs is…National Hot Dog Day, National Tapioca Pudding Day, and Orange Chicken Day.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for every blessing You have entrusted to us. Give us generous hearts that are willing to let go of what we no longer need so we can bless others in Your name. Teach us that true treasure is found not in what we keep, but in what we share. We also lift up the dedicated professionals who serve individuals with developmental disabilities. Strengthen, encourage, and reward them for their compassion, patience, and faithful service. As we go about our work today, help us use the gifts and talents You have given us to honor You, serve our neighbors, and bring kindness wherever we go. May our words, actions, and generosity reflect the love of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
