Well, there are ten more days left, and this month will be a memory. We are finally getting a lot of much-needed rain in the Sunshine State, and I am grateful. For a while, we were a dust bowl; the lakes were drying up in my neck of the woods, and thoughts of alligators walking looking for fresh water danced in my head- I sent many prayers up and was thankful for that first drop and every one after that!
On this 21st day of July, there are only 14 celebration days. Here are just a few: Belgium Independence Day, Guam Liberation Day, Kharchi Puja, National Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, National Day of Prayer Reflection and Thanksgiving in Montserrat, National Junk Food Day, and National Lamington Day. Of these fourteen celebrations, one that piqued my interest was Invite an Alien to Live with You Day. Exactly what type of celebration is that? This brings a playful twist to the idea of hospitality. Instead of a friend or neighbor, imagine a curious visitor from another galaxy settling into your spare room. They might ask wild questions, explore the fridge with wide eyes, or try your sofa like it’s a spaceship seat. Can you imagine?
But on a more serious note—National Be Someone Day is not a celebration but more of a relative reminder. This day challenges adults to take just ten seconds to make a difference in a child’s life. Created by Project Harmony, the observance empowers communities to recognize the signs of child abuse, pledge to speak up, and be the one stable, reliable adult a child can trust.
And in all humanity, let us not forget Racial Harmony Day, which is an annual observance in Singapore on July 21st that commemorates the 1964 race riots. Launched by the Ministry of Education in 1997, it teaches students and citizens the importance of maintaining racial and religious harmony in a multicultural society. This is a lesson that should be taught and learned globally. Did our nation’s capital get the memo?
Heavenly Father, thank You for the refreshing rain that nourishes the earth and reminds us that You faithfully provide for every need. As this month draws closer to its end, help us to remain grateful for both the big blessings and the quiet mercies we often overlook. Open our hearts to welcome others with kindness, to be a safe and caring presence in the life of a child in need of hope, and to pursue peace wherever there is division. Teach us to see every person as Your precious creation, worthy of love, dignity, and respect. May Your grace guide our words, our actions, and our hearts today, so that we may reflect the love of Christ in all we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
