As the end of the month is quickly approaching, and time seems to be going at an uncalculable speed…There is something that is on my mind today. That scripture that says …Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. (Acts 3:19-20 NKJV)

Today is the National Day of Repentance. An official public holiday in Papua New Guinea and a spiritual observance held every August 26. This day is dedicated to Christian prayer, national unity, and seeking forgiveness for national wrongs. This day was established as a gazetted public holiday in 2011. No one is excluded- today, nationwide church services, prayer nights, and public gatherings will be held. This is a moment when we all should genuinely take personal spiritual inventories of our lives.

And after those spiritual inventories, we can turn our attention to Women’s Equality Day, which is also celebrated today. This special event is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to mark the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment.

This amendment gave women the constitutional right to vote. Certified in August 1920, it stopped the federal government and states from denying the right to vote based on sex. Decades of work by suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton led to this win.

That leaves only 5 celebrations for today: National Cherry Popsicle Day, National Dog Day, National Spark the World Day, National Toilet Paper Day, and National WebMistress Day.

Heavenly Father, as this month comes to an end, slow our hearts long enough to examine our lives before You. Forgive our sins, cleanse our hearts, and help us turn fully back to You. On this day of repentance, bring healing, unity, justice, and renewal to our nations. As we remember the progress made toward equality, help us honor every person with dignity, fairness, and love. Lord, let repentance bring refreshing, and let our lives reflect the love of Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
