A Reflection Of Sacrifice And Unity

A dramatic image of the Twin Towers in New York City during a catastrophic event, showing explosions and smoke emanating from the buildings.

Whenever I think of September 11, twenty-five years ago, today, I can still see the Twin Towers falling — people leaping out of buildings. I remember seeing large airplanes crashing into these financial sentinels of New York in real time.

I felt total shock and disbelief. Where were our national defenses? The Air Force? How could those planes come into our airspace without even being noticed? These were the thoughts running through my mind. Not to mention all the lives being lost. If there were ever a sight of hopelessness, this was it.

A group of people, including a child, running away from a massive cloud of dust and debris from a building collapse in an urban setting.

And at the same time, there was a plot to ram our nation’s capital that was thwarted by some very courageous passengers on United Airlines Flight 93. But one got through and hit the Pentagon. It was like watching a Hollywood film unfold. Then came all of the clouds of destruction rolling down the streets of New York, as those sentinels began falling — while people on the ground were screaming and running for their lives.

Emergency services arrived on the scene; hope came, but…The odds were stacked against them at the onset, yet they were determined to save lives no matter the cost.

Emergency responders surveying the debris of a collapsed structure, with one member standing and two sitting in rescue gear, amidst a scene of devastation.

And as I write this, tears are rolling down my face. We are called the United States of America. Those emergency service members weren’t concerned with race, color, or creed. They weren’t concerned with who had money and who didn’t. They wore masks for protection as they went to work for goodness, not for greed.

They were united by the thought that precious, innocent lives were being threatened, and they vowed to save as many as possible with no thought of themselves. True courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to stand despite it.

Waving American flag against a clear blue sky

So this morning, as many of us were blessed to see today. Walk in solemnity as you go about your daily affairs, and remember that on this day an unforeseen enemy struck at the heart of our financial district. Many lives were lost on this day that we should never forget. Let our thoughts be united and our hearts filled with gratitude for them and those they left behind. And let us thank God for the resilience of our nation, not its destruction.

Yet Lady Liberty still stands on our shores…One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
