Is Writing Your Passion

Or Your Purpose?

Twenty years ago, I embarked on a thrilling adventure with no map, no compass, and only a flicker of curiosity to guide me. At 17, I began scribbling poetry, my soul pouring onto the page with all the uneasiness and passion of youth. But like so many things in those tumultuous years, that first precious book of verse vanished, lost in the chaos.

Yet the words, they never truly left me. Oh, I still wrote poetry, but it became just one thread in the tapestry of my creativity. Short stories? I could weave a spellbinding tale now and then, but they never felt quite…right. My writing, it seemed, had a different destiny in mind…

And then, like a clarion call, it hit me. I was lost in the swirling notes of a Mozart sonata when the realization struck: for those of us who are truly, deeply serious about our craft, writing is a delicate balancing act between passion and purpose. I’d read those breezy blog posts, the ones that glibly claim writing is all about joy, joy, joy. And I’d think, “Yes, but…” My mother’s wise words echoed in my mind, the ones she repeated when I was a child, entranced by the magic of words: “When you love what you do, you’ll do it better than most, because it won’t feel like work at all. It will be a delicious choice, a pleasure to indulge in.”

And that’s when it clicked. What we do, the writers, the artists, the creatives…it’s like composing a magnificent symphony. Each stanza, each sentence, each perfectly chosen word builds towards a grand finale. But the true joy, the secret delight, lies in all the staccatos and allegros along the way. The sudden bursts of inspiration, the slow builds of meaning, the satisfying crash of a perfectly crafted climax. That’s where the magic lives…

Always between our passion and God’s purpose.

Now that you little fingers are pointing to true north…peck those darn keys as if your life depended on it!

Thank you for your continued support and readership. Until next week…Blessings and Peace!
