A feast is made for laughter,
And wine makes merry;
But money answers everything. (Ecclesiastes 10:19 NKJV)
ECCLESIASTES 10 IN ITS ENTIRETY.
Thought For The Week: This verse from the “Teacher” in Ecclesiastes can seem unsettling. Is this really a biblical principle? A proper reading of the book shows that the Teacher often observes the world from an earthly, or “under the sun,” perspective to demonstrate its futility without God. From this limited viewpoint, money does appear to solve all things. A leaky house can be fixed with money. A lavish feast and fine wine that bring temporary happiness are bought with money. In a superficial, carnal sense, money answers every material need.
However, the Teacher also knows the limits of this truth. Money cannot buy joy, wisdom, or a clear conscience. As commentator Matthew Henry wrote, “it answers nothing to the soul; it will not procure the pardon of sin, the favor of God, the peace of conscience”. In the same book, the Teacher concludes that fearing God and keeping His commandments is the ultimate purpose of human life (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 NKJV). The New Testament warns, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV), and that you cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24 NKJV).
So, what should our posture be toward money? It is a tool, a resource God has provided for our needs and for our enjoyment. It becomes a problem only when we elevate it to the position of “answer for everything,” hoping it will bring lasting happiness, security, or fulfillment. True contentment comes from trusting in God as our ultimate provider, wisely managing the resources He gives, and using them to serve His purposes. Money can meet many needs in this life, but only God can meet the needs of our souls.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your generous provision in our lives. You have given us all things to enjoy and have equipped us to handle the practical necessities of life. We confess that we often look to money as the answer to all our problems, placing our trust in our finances rather than in Your faithfulness.
Help us to remember the distinction between our earthly needs and the deep needs of our souls. Give us the wisdom to manage our resources well, and the generosity to use what you have given us to bless others and build your kingdom. Free us from the foolishness of believing that money can buy happiness or peace.
Remind us that our greatest security is not found in our bank account but in a relationship with You. When we are tempted to chase worldly comforts, turn our hearts back to You, the true and eternal source of all joy. May we serve You and not money, knowing that You alone are the ultimate answer to everything. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
