Why ‘O Holy Night’ Resonates at Christmas

Earlier this morning, I was reading some of my fellow bloggers’ posts. One asked their readers to share their favorite Christmas songs. I have a fairly long list of songs, everything from Jingle Bells to Silent Night, but the one that always stands out to me is “Oh, Holy Night.”

As a musician, the one thing I learned early in life was to listen to the lyrics of a song and then the melody. Every time I hear this song, it pierces my heart. Because the words really drive home the scene of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and God’s purpose for His coming into the world.

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth,
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
‘Til He appeared, and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees,
O hear the angel voices,
O night divine!
O night when Christ was born.
O night, divine!
O night, O night divine!

Truly, He taught us to love one another,
His law is love, and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,
And in His name, all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord!
Their name forever praise we!
Noel, Noel,
O night, O night divine,
Noel, Noel!
O night, O night divine,
Noel, Noel!
Ooh, ooh, holy night.

What’s your favorite Christmas song and why?
