Two weeks ago I did a Free Christian E-Books post. Scouring through those books I found How God Guides pdf. It’s only 11 pages, but never have I read such a concise and revealing account of the title subject.
Torrey’s jumping point begins with Psalm 73:23-24, “Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.” Then he begins to expound on the six ways God guides His people.
- God Guides by His Word
- God Leads by His Spirit
- God Guides Us by Enlightening Our Judgment
- God May Guide by Visions and Dreams
- God Does Not Guide by Casting Lots In This Dispensation
- God Guides by His Providence
With each topic, first Torrey gives you the corresponding scriptures and then follows with various examples to describe, in detail, what each means and the correct and incorrect usages as they apply to our everyday lives. He further Illustrates, how, through presumptuous behavior, we sometimes miss God. Torrey writes, “Many miss God’s guidance by doing things too soon. Had they waited until God had enabled them to see clearly, under the illumination of His Holy Spirit, they would have avoided disastrous mistakes. The principle that “the one who trusts will never be dismayed,” (Isaiah 28:16) applies right here.” (pg. 8)
In his description of God’s guidance by visions and dreams—Torrey states, “God does lead by dreams today.” Then tells the reader to be cautious ,”and we should be very careful and prayerful and Scriptural in deciding that any dream is from God.” (pg. 8)
Throughout this reading from beginning to end, he emphasises “no matter what, that all readings, whether they be by the Spirit, by visions, by providences, by our own judgment, or by advice of friends, or in any other way, must be tested by the Word of God.“
