So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17 NKJV)
Romans 10 in its entirety.
Thought for the Week: Before we can believe, there must be something for us to believe. That something is the word of God, which is preached and we hear. In the first place, both the act of hearer and preacher are involved; in the second place, only the act of the hearer. Here the Apostle Paul speaks of the ordinary means by which faith is wrought; not confining or limiting the Spirit of God, who works, or may work, by extraordinary means or without any means at all. The gospel cannot be lawfully preached to us, for us to hear it, but by God’s command; therefore, those preaching the Word must be commissioned not by men, but by God.
Prayer: Dear Lord,
Thank you that your Holy Spirit helps me to discern and understand your Word. Give me a hunger to feed my soul on Scripture every day, as you have said, “…man shall not live by bread alone but on every Word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4). I recognize that living according to Scripture gives me a firm foundation for this life and the life to come because “your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens” (Psalm 119:89). Thank you that your Word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path so that I can walk securely. (Psalm 119:105) In Jesus’ name. Amen.
