While sitting here at my desk reminiscing about the past. The thought dawned on me…”What if you’d never learned to type?” Back in high school, our typing class consisted of desks filled with IBM Selectric typewriters. Those were the most intimidating machines I’d ever seen in my life. Besides shorthand, typing was my most terrifying class. And the other horrifying thought was…What if I can’t master it?
You see, back then it was firmly believed that to get good-paying jobs you had to know shorthand and you had to know how to type. We were expected to learn those darn keys to the point that we didn’t have to look at them. A lot like holding a PS game controller in your hand for the first time and having to look at your hands every time you moved because if you didn’t you might end up running off a cliff and losing your last life! Or running out of ‘Wite-Out‘ as it were.
Thank God for Edwin Johanknecht!

So I’d grab my trusty Applied Typing textbook out of the locker and off to the races. Week in and week out we had those challenging pages looking at us with a silent “dare you, bet you can’t do this.” The most popular typing line back then was “Every good boy does fine.” Weird, I can still remember that today. Well, I don’t know about every good boy doing fine because God knows I was struggling with it. Until… after weeks of typing from my textbook…

We walked into class to find all of the typewriter keys covered up…Are you kidding me we’re going to do this now? Anywho—after the jury went out on that one. Somehow I managed to muster up the strength and ingenuity to put those darn keys under my command. Now some trillion years later who knew that one class would bring me into the computer age with the mastery of the keyboard. Something that is practically a prerequisite to anything we choose to do today or are hired to do. I suppose for those who can’t type Dragon is their Obi-Wan Kenobi. You know—“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi you’re my only hope!”
In conclusion, would like to say I am so thankful for Typing Class back in those high school days. If I hadn’t mastered it I couldn’t type this post today. There wouldn’t be a desk for me at the IT table. And most notably, I probably would’ve never ventured into the Bloggers’ realm to share God’s word.
So now that you’ve had a chuckle….buckle down at those darn keys and go to it! Thank you so much for your continued readership and support. Until next week…Blessings and Peace!

Love the typing story! Sometimes what we like the least pays off in the long run.
