Why Do You Write?

Here’s a blast from the past…

In an infinite word pool, somewhere out there in this vast universe, are some phenomenal reasons why writers write. Looking through my literary telescope, I located some famous writers who shared the reasons why they write…

In an essay called Why I Write, George Orwell wrote, “From a very early age, perhaps the age of five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. Between the ages of about seventeen and twenty-four, I tried to abandon this idea, but I did so with the consciousness that I was outraging my true nature and that sooner or later I should have to settle down and write books.”

Mary Karr, author of The Liar’s Club, said, “I write to dream; to connect with other human beings; to record; to clarify; to visit the dead. I have a kind of primitive need to leave a mark on the world. Also, I have a need for money.”

David Baldacci, the writer behind Absolute Power, claims, “If writing were illegal, I’d be in prison. I can’t not write. It’s a compulsion.”

Stephen King revealed that part of the reason he began to write was to drown that scariness out of his mind, drive those darkest fears temporarily from his mind. Go figure.

As you can see in this post’s header—some of the reasons writers write are…

  • To express their thoughts.
  • They love to.
  • To tell about something they love.
  • To share experiences.
  • To share feelings.
  • To ask questions.
  • To teach.
  • To tell about important events.

My reason for writing is because I have been through things in life and survived, which could help someone else along the way. I will be able to connect to their humanity by helping them avoid those same pitfalls or giving them the tools to be able to battle their way through certain problems successfully. A keyboard with a voice to help.

What is your reason for writing? Please leave your reason in the comment section below, along with your website address, so that we can see what you’ve created and get to know you better. I’m thinking about making this a monthly post so that writers can meet each other, exchange ideas, and observe each other’s websites.

Who knows, you may be the next George Orwell, Mary Karr, David Baldacci, or Stephen King. It’s entirely up to you.

Now that you’ve gotten more gas for that think tank of yours…Keep punching those darn keys!

Thank you so much for your continued readership and support. Until next week…Blessings and Peace!
