*Verse of the Day

Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind? (1 Corinthians 14:22-23 NKJV)

I CORINTHIANS 14 IN ITS ENTIRETY.

  1. This passage looks like contradictory statements – are tongues a sign for unbelievers, or do they make unbelievers think you’re crazy?

It helps to keep in mind that this is a letter, written in response to a letter from the Corinthian church to Paul. There are a couple of places where there seems to be a statement followed by another statement that seems to say the opposite. But Paul is addressing issues that have been brought up. He quotes the Corinthians, then corrects them. Since ancient Greek didn’t have quotation marks, the reader has to look at the context. This might take some effort on our part, but the Corinthians wouldn’t have had any trouble recognizing their own words.

These are my thoughts, anyway, when asked about “contradictions” in I Corinthians.
