Some months ago I was teaching a Bible Study lesson where I told my students what I called grace–God’s Righteousness At Christ’s Expense. The righteousness of God allowed Him to, by way of the Holy Spirit, bring Jesus through forty-two generations into the world to reconcile us with Him, because sin had separated us from God. Had Jesus not come (that’s why I say at Christ’s expense) spiritually, we would be a lost and dying world. It was Jesus who gave the sacrifice. It was Jesus who died on the cross at Calvary and It was Jesus who shed his blood for the redemption of humanity’s sins. That’s the price He paid. That’s the expense He paid. But it was God’s righteousness that gave Jesus the strength to do so. God’s righteousness was why Christ was ever born. God’s righteousness is why Jesus came through forty-two generations in order to see his mission through to the end. God’s righteousness is why when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane—even though he wrestled in prayer concerning His mission in the final analysis he declared “Not my will but Thine be done.” (Luke 22:42) God’s righteousness at Christ’s expense.

God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoso believeth in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV) When this life on earth is over we still have everlasting eternal life with Christ Jesus. God’s righteousness at Christ’s expense. We don’t seem to understand…No matter where you look God’s grace is just sprinkled all over the place. Think about it— Jesus came to this earth specifically to die for the sins of mankind—that was His mission. He was brought into the world to reconcile us back to God. The curtain split twain in the temple giving us access to the Holiest of Holies. (Matthew 27:51) God’s righteousness at Christ’s expense.

That’s why His grace is a free gift.

This is why we can never repay Him for what He’s done. Just think about how expensive it was for the blood he shed. Think about how expensive it was for him to go to the cross. Think how expensive it was for Jesus to say “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” That’s why His grace is a free gift. You can’t buy it—not even if you are the richest man on earth. You still don’t have enough money. You can’t put a price tag on what He has done. Why? It came at the expense of Christ’s life. We should always be in a posture of thanksgiving. Because if you are reading this right now…it was His grace that kept us through the night as we slept and slumbered. It was His grace that woke us up this morning and started us on our way.

No matter how discombobulated you are or your life may seem—God’s grace is still sufficient. Why? Because Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain…He washed it white as snow.

But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. (Romans 5:15 NKJV)
