Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42 NKJV)

it was Martha who invited Jesus and probably the apostles too. But Mary chose to seek first the kingdom and hear what Jesus had to say. Because she knew from what she’d probably heard that He was a great teacher who performed many miracles—therefore His word was spirit and life. On the other hand, Martha was complaining because Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus while she was probably doing all the preparations for her dinner guests. But notice the text says that she was distracted concerning her service. And Jesus rebuked her by saying the things she was worried and troubled about, yes they were appreciated but the one important thing that was needed she overlooked.

No matter how good and honorable our intentions might be they should never distract us from God’s word. Some of us, as children of God, are on so many church committees we have forgotten to make the time to be committed to studying the Word and praying. We exhaust ourselves with works leaving the most important things undone. This can, at times, prove to be dangerous because if you are active and not communing with God you will become just like Martha. You cannot have a thriving and successful ministry without communion with God. Even Jesus went up to the mountain to pray. (Luke 6:12 NKJV) Where do you think all of his strength and power came from?

There is no doubt that both women loved Jesus.

There is no doubt that both women loved Jesus. But notice one wanted her work recognized and the other wanted to receive from the Lord so that she might serve him better. Martha was an anxious, fretful, worried woman with a bit of a temper at times. Not to mention she was erroneous in complaining about her sister in front of the company. While Mary, like a child, seemed to be in perfect peace sitting at the feet of the Master… The word says You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. (Isaiah 26:3 NKJV) Let’s be realistic here… would you want a meal prepared by a woman who is frustrated and aggravated or one prepared by a woman in perfect peace? That’s a no-brainer.

While Martha was stirring in the kitchen Mary like a little child was sitting at the feet of the Lord learning His word and learning the importance of obeying that Word. Which enlarged her faith. She wasn’t trying to get recognized she was trying to get revelation. For it is written, At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”  Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.” (Matthew 18:1-5 NKJV)
