Sitting here at the hotel desk listening to worship music this morning, this song, “Awesome,” is playing. The lyrics immediately catch your attention… My God is awesome. He can move mountains. Keep me in the valley — hide me from the rain. My God is awesome, heals me when I’m broken, strengthens me when I am weak, and forever He will reign.

In my mind’s eye, I picture God as the Great Shepherd, protecting us, His sheep. I see Him walking ahead of us, knowing every turn in the path, every danger lurking beyond the bend, and every place where we might stumble. He knows where the green pastures are and where the still waters can be found. He knows when we need to move forward and when we need to rest.

What a comforting thought — that the Shepherd knows the way even when we don’t.

Sometimes life feels like a valley. We may find ourselves surrounded by uncertainty, disappointment, grief, or circumstances we cannot understand. We wonder why God has allowed us to walk this particular path. Yet the Shepherd has not abandoned us in the valley. He is there with us.

Psalm 23 reminds us that even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we don’t have to fear, because He is with us. Notice that Scripture says “through” the valley. The valley is not our final destination. It is a passage we travel with our Shepherd.

And sometimes He leads us through storms we would never have chosen. We may pray for the rain to stop, while God is teaching us that He can keep us secure even while the rain falls. We may ask Him to move the mountain, while He is strengthening our faith as we climb.

Our God is awesome — not just because He moves mountains, but because He walks beside us when the mountains remain.

He heals the broken places. He gives strength when ours is gone. He lifts us when we fall. He protects us when we cannot see the dangers ahead. And when we cannot understand His plan, we can still trust His heart.

Today, wherever you find yourself…on a mountaintop, in a valley, or somewhere between the two. Always remember you are not walking alone. The Great Shepherd is near. He knows your name. He knows your need. He knows the way home. And forever, He will reign.
