It seems you can’t go anywhere blogging nowadays without seeing Writing Prompts. The internet seems to be oversaturated with them. Asking you everything from remembering your first book to looking at an abstract piece of art and writing about what you see.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing bad about a good writing prompt. In fact, these can be very useful when you’re staring blankly at the page and have absolutely no idea what to do. They spur us into creative action, shift perspectives, and can sometimes reveal writing you didn’t even know you had inside of you. But somewhere in between there, we got a little too used to them, it seems.

The strongest writing isn’t born out of someone else asking a question; it’s born out of living your life, noticing your surroundings, and having something you actually need to say. Not everything we’re going to post will have to seamlessly fit inside the box of somebody’s challenge, and not every blog post should be answering someone’s prompt or challenge; I think we have way more of something to say that starts with a simple I was thinking about and we just can’t help ourselves.

Writing prompts should never be anything but a starting point, not the whole picture. So use prompts as inspiration when they come naturally to you, if that spark is lit within you following that thread, and if it isn’t, then ditch it. You yourself hold enough information without even thinking!

Your thoughts, opinions, and experiences are plenty and more than you and I could think to compile and organize for others in the best of all ways!! After all, your followers aren’t following you as the result of Prompt #237 but because they want to hear your voice, and you alone bring that.

Thus, in the quest to compile a decent blog content plan with another prompted posting a.k.a “challenge your creativity prompt’ “—go the whole nine yards, this is the challenge of writing. Before searching for prompts online, ask yourselves, ‘ What do I want to say?’ The rest is you.
