How many of us have heard since childhood “It is more blessed to give than to receive”? These words were spoken by the Apostle Paul…” And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20:36b)
But is it really more blessed to give than to receive?
It is so easy to give when we expect something in return. We have learned from the world how to invest money, time, and sometimes our affection where it proves to be the most beneficial. But on the flip side of that coin if we are truly children of God then we must learn to give as our Father does. You know—without thought of merit or return?
From a realistic standpoint, He freely gives to us more times than we can count. And we will never be able to repay Him for all that He has given us. (John 3:16 NKJV)
She gave from a posture of humility…
Let us consider the widow and the mite. She gave from a posture of humility, and Jesus considered her offering to be of more worth than the more fortunate who’d given out of their abundance. Why? Because her offering was one of sacrifice—out of all she had. From her heart. (Mark 12:41-44 NKJV)
Or the widow who gave to the prophet and her jar of flour was never empty and the jug of oil never ran out because she obeyed the word of God that was spoken by the prophet Elijah in the midst of what she saw as a hopeless circumstance. (I Kings 17:8-16 NKJV)

And let us not forget the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears, dried them with her hair, never stopped kissing His feet, and anointed them with expensive perfume from an alabaster box. Of her, Jesus says to Simon the Pharisee, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” (Luke 7:44-47 NKJV)
Is it more blessed to give than to receive?
Is it more blessed to give than to receive? Indeed it is when we are not looking for a return or a tax write-off. But when it is simply in obedience to the word of God spoken by a true prophet, man or woman of God. Not some lying wonder who Jesus describes as “scribes which devour widows houses and for a pretense make long prayers.” (Mark 12:38-40 NKJV) Or warns us to “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” (Matthew 7:15 NKJV)
Who knows you just might find a blessing from giving a heart-rending offering whether it is money, your last bit of food, or a priceless gift. But the most precious gift of all in these blessings is the forgiveness of our sins by our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. Which we all need without fail. (Romans 3:23 NKJV)
