Why Isn’t Hell Preached Anymore?

In a world filled with comfort and compromise, we must ask: Why isn’t Hell preached anymore? Have we allowed culture and convenience to overshadow the urgency of the eternal truth?

In an era where churches aim to attract larger crowds and avoid discomfort, the doctrine of Hell has been quietly sidelined. Preachers today seem hesitant to speak of it, as though its mention might be offensive or outdated. But what if this is exactly what our churches need to hear now?

A gospel that omits Hell is like a half-painted masterpiece. It leaves out the darkness that makes the light so brilliant. Without Hell, there is no urgency. Without Hell, there is no clear call to salvation. We must remember that Jesus didn’t come to offer a self-help program, but to rescue us from eternal separation. (John 3:16 NKJV)

“Jesus spoke more about Hell than anyone in the Bible. In Matthew 10:28, He warns, ‘Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in Hell.’ If we claim to follow Jesus, how can we ignore His words?”

Not only is that text something to ponder but I also remember hearing a pastor say…”Heaven is real, Hell is hot and Eternity is long.” In extremely hot weather I’ve even said “If Hell is any hotter than this I truly do not want to go there!”

Hell is mentioned several times in the Scriptures—Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.“ (Isaiah 5:14 KJV) Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: (Matthew 25:41 NKJV) So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 13:49-50 NKJV)

It’s not about satisfying itching ears. (2 Timothy 4:1-4 KJV) No, it’s about preaching to a people so they will get an itch not to go to Hell! Seemingly, we have relinquished Hell as being some imaginary place that only exists in the minds of the religous zealots today—You know—the odd ones who walk the streets holding signs to get your attention about the second coming of a Saviour who gave his live for our eternal salvation?

In our quest for relevance, we have allowed the eternal truths to be diluted. But this isn’t about being relevant—it’s about being faithful. If we truly love people, we will speak the truth, no matter how uncomfortable. The absence of Hell in our pulpits is an abdication of the calling to warn, to challenge, and to lead others to salvation.

It’s time to confront the uncomfortable truths. It’s time to preach the full gospel—the message that saves, not just soothes. If we are to be true to our faith, we must speak boldly of both Heaven and Hell. For only when we recognize the gravity of eternity will we truly understand the magnitude of grace. Let’s not shrink back. Let’s preach the truth, in season and out of season, for the sake of souls and the glory of God.

  1. I recall the first sermon I heard dedicated solely to God’s love. It was in 1970 on a college campus.
Most sermons I heard as a child involved some warning of Father’s wrath!
However, by the 1990s the pendulum had swung all the way over; no one taught about hell or judgement, and the pendulum still remains mostly to that side.
We really need teaching from pastors and teachers who present the “whole counsel of God.”
