Last week, I was talking to a minister friend who had texted me to ask about my mother’s well-being. As she’d been praying for her. And I let her know that Momma said to tell all those who had prayed for her, “Thank you,” and she hadn’t felt that good in weeks!
As we began conversing at the end of our discussion, somehow or another, I ended on the scripture Abide in Me, and I in you. (John 15:4a NKJV) And then posed the question, “Who are you abiding in? Emphasizing this should be the question we are all asking ourselves.
The entire text reads, Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. (John 15:4 NKJV)

Jesus uses the metaphor of a vine and its branches to illustrate the necessity of remaining connected to Him for spiritual fruitfulness. He emphasizes that just as a branch cannot produce fruit on its own without the vine, believers cannot produce spiritual fruit without remaining in Him. This connection, or “abiding,” is described as an ongoing, intimate relationship with Jesus, where His life flows through the believer, enabling them to live out God’s will and bear fruit.
- The Vine and the Branches: Jesus identifies Himself as the vine, the source of life and nourishment, and His followers as the branches, dependent on the vine for their ability to bear fruit.
- Abiding in Him: This means to remain connected to Jesus, to dwell in Him, and to allow His word to shape our thoughts, actions, and affections.
- Bearing Fruit: This refers to the visible evidence of a life transformed by Christ, such as the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control).
- Spiritual Vitality: Without this connection, believers lack the spiritual life and power to live as God intends.
- Doing Nothing Apart from Him: Jesus states that apart from Him, we can do nothing of lasting value.

We must never forget that abiding in Christ is essential for spiritual growth and fruitfulness. It is not a one-time event but an ongoing relationship with Jesus. This relationship is maintained through prayer, studying His word, and obedience to His teachings. When we abide in Christ, His life flows through us, enabling us to live a meaningful and fruitful life.
Who are you abiding in?

More than just fruitfulness, abiding means connected to Life. If we do not stay connected to Him, not only are we “fruitless,” we die.
But now I know from where your wisdom comes: abiding in Jesus!😉
