Caught In The Act

Recently at her birthday celebration, my dear friend, Shirley read this beautiful yet powerful story created from the text in John 8:3-11. I pray it touches your heart the way it did mine…

“Stop! Stop! STOP! Please have mercy!”
“Oh, I remember, I remember that day and how a storm of anger erupted and how enraged the people were. I remember the loud screams and shouts to stone me, to kill me. I even remember the gossiping whispers.”

“There I stood, disheveled clothes, hair a mess and reeking strongly of the stench of guilt and sin. I was drowning in the waste of many backslidden years that tell the story of where I’ve been… Darkness had deceived me. It had never hidden my iniquities. I was guilty, guilty of adultery. How would I plead? Who would speak for me? Who could speak for me?”

“By law, I deserved to die. My indiscretions were worthy of death. The sentence was too great. Even now, the thoughts suffocated me. They choke me. They steal my gasping breath.”

The verdict demanded payment and justice should be done. But just then, I heard someone say that if I would confess my faults. He would forgive me. He would pay the price. He was God’s own Son.

Then He turned and spoke to the crowd, “If anyone of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone.”

Suddenly, one by one, that angry, hateful mob dropped their stones and I was left with no one to condemn me, just me with Him all alone. As I stood there in scandalous shame, but with thanksgiving. He lovingly looked into my eyes and said, “Go and sin no more.”

What kind of love is this that would look beyond all my faults and see to my needs? What kind of love is this? To this love, I yield, I give up, I surrender, I concede.

This loving Stranger died in my place, died for me and yet I know that He still lives. I can hear His heart beating, beating and speaking to me. “It’s time now yourself to forgive. It’s time now yourself to forgive.”

I would like to thank Ms. Shirley for this beautiful writing. It is so noteworthy, inspiring, and fitting for this day.
