This past Thursday I found myself in a precarious place as I had overslept and was late for work. I’d only been there 2 weeks and they’d switched my regular work schedule to a training schedule of 7am-4pm. Wednesday night wasn’t a great night for me as Bobbie kept me up quite late and I’d gotten very little sleep that night or the night before. However, I set my trusty alarm clock and was sure I’d wake up on time…

The alarm did clamor and I shut it off then laid back down for a moment, fell back to sleep, and when I woke up it was 7:45am and I was extremely late! In a panic, my first thought was “maybe this job isn’t for you and you ought to just quit right now!”—then the next was “calm down, just call your supervisor and let him know what happened.” I couldn’t find his phone number, so I had to call my former trainer to get it.

I called him and after explaining myself he said, “We all have those days and God never gives us more than we can bear.” Then told me to sit down drink a cup of coffee and gather my thoughts. Bob had a nurse coming, but she wouldn’t be there until 10am and my boss said after I got her and Bob situated to give him an update and let him know when I’d be coming in.

It changed my entire perspective and made me realize…

After getting off that call something hit me like a bolt and said “you must always be merciful because you never know when you might need mercy yourself.” It changed my entire perspective and made me realize that at any given moment our situations can go from being in our “comfort zones” into “needing a mercy zone.” So instead of reacting to my situation, I did according to what Jesus spoke, “Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.” (Matthew 5:7 NKJV) I extended even greater mercy to Bobbie. We have to extend mercy even to those who are not always so nice—who are not always so gracious to us. We cannot act like the servant whose master forgave him his debt yet he could not do likewise for one of his fellow servants. (Matthew 18:23-35 NKJV)

You see my friend, that day I learned forgiveness is an act of mercy instead of an act of justice. My boss showed me that. So remember to always be merciful because you never know when you just might need it yourself!
