This title has been stored in Drafts for quite some time, but this morning this scripture popped out at me…Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:29 NKJV)
This beautiful verse speaks to the concept of finding rest and peace through humility and learning from Jesus. We go to church whether physically or online from Sunday to Sunday because we are seeking to better ourselves spiritually and mentally as this improvement only comes through applying God’s word to our lives. Many of us have probably read this text several times and some probably have it memorized but have you truly applied this scripture to your life? (James 1:22-25 NKJV) Let us now consider some steps to personal application…
- Reflect on the verse: Spend time meditating on Matthew 11:29 and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal its meaning for your life. What does it look like to “take his yoke upon you” and “learn from him”?
- Honest self-evaluation: Be willing to admit areas where you struggle with pride, control, or the need to be in charge. Ask the Lord to reveal these areas to you and give you the courage to let go. (Psalm 139:23-24 NKJV)
- Intentional learning: Seek out opportunities to learn more about Jesus. This could include reading the Gospels, attending a Bible study, or spending quiet time in prayer and meditation. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to his teachings. (Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV)
- Practice humility daily: Look for small ways to practice humility each day. This could be as simple as being patient with a difficult person, admitting when you’re wrong, or serving others without expecting anything in return. (1 Peter 5:5-6 NKJV)
- Persevere in prayer: Commit to regular prayer, asking Jesus to guide you in your journey towards humility and rest. Ask him to show you how to find peace in his presence and to trust in his care for you. (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV)
We have to come to grips with who we are in our relationship with God to truly apply this scripture to our lives. The truth of the matter is if you are in a true relationship with God He is going to bring every one of us to a point where we must deal with ourselves. The closer you get to Jesus the less important you feel and you begin to realize like the prophet…“Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5 NKJV)
These five steps will point you in the direction of intentionally seeking to humble yourself and learn from Jesus, which is the path to finding true rest and peace. Always remember, the journey towards humility and learning from Jesus is a lifelong process, but we pray these steps will help you get started on the right path.
Thank you so much for your continued readership and support. Until next week…Blessings and Peace!
