A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24 NKJV)

The other day I was cleaning the bookshelves in my office and came across a bookmark my best friend Carole gave me while God and I were in that battle with leukemia. It reads “When you see only one set of footprints it was then that I carried you.” This memento I’ve kept for many years no matter where I go.
Perhaps it is the fact that we’ve been childhood friends forever and her love and encouragement are there to remind me of the love in prayers she always sends up for me whether I talk to her or not. Or maybe it’s the enduring legacy of a friendship that has overcome many storms in our lives. These insurmountable losses that we had to walk through with courage with the reassurance that God always knows what is best for us. (Romans 8:28 NKJV) Maybe it’s the memories of the good old days when we played in the sandbox or were up to some high jinx that only God knows. Someone with whom I can share my innermost thoughts who really understands my mind and can get on my case with no resistance because she speaks with wisdom and peace.

No matter the distance, our friendship extends beyond the many miles that have separated us through the years. Just like the Three Musketeers—there were originally three of us, Carole, Carolyn, and Claudia. We called ourselves the Three Cs which was our private banter—but God took Carolyn home some time ago. We really miss her a lot.
And then there were two walking under the shadow of the Almighty—win. lose or draw. Because our hope lies in nothing less than Jesus’ love and His righteousness.
Through it all we put our faith and trust in an Almighty God who has protected us and directed us through so many battles in those torrential seasons.
I thank God for my best friend and that bookmark—whenever I look at it I am reminded of two things—a friend who showed me I wasn’t alone but in the hands of a Sovereign who never sleeps or slumbers. And a victory that was only won by those mighty hands.
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt. (I Samuel 18:3-4 NKJV)

My best friend in my church as a teen was Larry Smith. He was born a few weeks before me, so many of his birthday cards noted, “You’re still older than me!😂”
We stayed in touch all through college and he became a minister of the Assemblies of God after graduation; he went to Bangladesh as soon as he was allowed by the denomination and has lived there ever since! He has started about 100 children’s homes that take in orphans and street kids so they can have a regular meal. He led several young people to start a tv work telling Bible stories… in a land that is 95+% Muslim!
He sent out thousands of basic Bible studies to people who would request them: The Great Questions of Life and started many house churches with MBB (Muslim Background Believers).
He remains my dearest friend like David was to Jonathan.
